My travel column GONE was syndicated in alternative newsweeklies in Canada and the US, and I was a columnist for The Montreal Gazette and In Dublin Magazine. I am a member of SATW, the Society of American Travel Writers, and a former member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. I was a regular contributor to London’s online Travel Intelligence. No longer based in Inverness, I still enjoy uncovering odd Scottish things for OddScotland.com with my Scottish partner Gordon Mooney.

Travel writing is a hybrid genre which intersects with memoir, fiction, creative non-fiction, essay and journalism. It embraces many forms, but it is most distinct for expressing a strong sense of place.

You don't have to go to the ends of the earth to look for material for an interesting tale—if you put yourself and your sensibilities into the adventure, express an authentic voice, and become a window onto a special world or experience.

Today’s global multi-media world gives those interested in travel writing more opportunity and range for exploration, research and expression than ever before.
